When applying for a position, two documents will immediately stand out: a resume and a CV (curriculum vitae). These two are often requested by employers from job seekers. Therefore, if you are applying for a job, you should definitely have copies of both your resume and CV.
The resume and CV are very similar to each other. Although they may differ in structure and presentation, they often contain the same content. Due to their similarity, it is possible to get them mixed up. However, this could lead to immediate rejection by your potential employer because they may not appreciate the confusion of mixing up your resumes and CVs and bringing the wrong document.
To help you avoid the mix-up between resumes and CVs, here are some useful guidelines.

1. Read job postings carefully. Some employers/companies specify which type of document(s) to submit when applying for a position. Therefore, be attentive and look for this specific information in the job posting.
2. If no specific information is provided in the job posting, it is safe to assume that if you are in the United States, the standard document to submit to the employer is the Resume. However, if you are anywhere in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, or Asia, you should submit your CV. Keep in mind that in the U.S., a CV is primarily used when applying for international, academic, educational, scientific, and/or research positions or for fellowships or scholarships.
3. When asked for an interview, be prepared and bring copies of both your resume and curriculum vitae. You never know which document the interviewer may request, so it would be helpful if you come prepared and bring copies of both.
4. Keep copies of your resumes and CV in separate file slots or folders and label them. You can also use color-coded labels or folders to make it easier to find them when the interviewer asks for a copy.
A CV and a resume are distinct documents and should not be mixed up. Remember that they serve different purposes and should ALWAYS be used accordingly.
