To pay homage to the noble and meaningful professions of our ancestors, here is the continuation of our list of 35 crucial jobs that no longer exist:

11. Lungers

One of the most ironically titled jobs, “Lungers” were employed to fan the flames in alchemist shops. Due to the hazardous elements present in the labs, the actual lungs of these “Lungers” wore out quickly. This is a job that likely led to early retirement.

12. Computers

Before Charles Babbage invented the computer, there were already individuals known as “Computers.” Mostly women, they manually converted and computed numbers. During both World Wars, the demand for this occupation was high. Can you even imagine a world without the internet? Many of the jobs that no longer exist might still be relevant today.

13. Food Safety Testers

In ancient times, especially in castles, before food was served to royalty, a food safety tester would sample all the dishes to ensure they were safe to eat and not poisoned.
Thank goodness Gordon Ramsay wasn’t around then.

14. Knocker-Uppers

No, these individuals weren’t tasked with getting women pregnant. Instead, they woke people up house by house to ensure they weren’t late for work.
Perhaps this is why it made its way into the hall of fame for extinct jobs.

15. Lector Factory Workers

Think of them as the old version of audiobooks. They were hired to read materials to workers to keep them entertained while they worked.
Thank goodness for audio players, right? Imagine if someone decided to go the extra mile and reenact what was being read—then they might not have ended up on the list of jobs that no longer exist.

16. Log Drivers

Even before roads were built, log drivers were at work. Their responsibility was to transport logs and lumber by floating them down rivers.
They were like the Fast and Furious crew of their time. Perhaps that’s why this job found its way to the list of extinct jobs?

17. Street Sweepers

As the name suggests, they cleaned streets and sidewalks and collected garbage and debris, usually during the early hours when there were fewer people around.
I imagine their job would be easier if they enlisted the help of animals. Who knows, given today’s heightened environmental awareness, this job might make a comeback from the list of jobs that no longer exist?

18. Pre-Radar Listeners

Imagine sitting for hours with a huge contraption (that detected sound waves) on your ear, listening for incoming enemy attacks. Those who held this role were called Pre-Radar Listeners.
They were like reverse DJs or something.

19. Quarrymen

These individuals extracted stone from the earth to carve various items. It was a hazardous job as stones could easily fall and injure or kill workers.

20. Lamp Lighters

Another straightforward job, Lamp Lighters would go around neighborhoods manually lighting gas-fueled lamps.
We can only imagine how frustrated they’d be if Dumbledore were in charge. “I have to light this again?!” Perhaps that’s why they joined the ranks of jobs that no longer exist. Because Dumbledore, and then Ron, kept clicking the lighter.

21. Coal Stokers

Coal stokers ensured ships kept running by shoveling coal into the furnaces. Working in the furnace room, this was an exhausting and perilous occupation.
So as the ships sailed, dozens of men toiled below. No worries.

22. Switchboard Operators

This occupation was highly significant not too long ago. A switchboard operator’s task was to manually connect each phone call by linking wires. This profession was predominantly held by women.
This endeavor might have been simpler—even if you’re an ex-felon, perhaps?

23. Sin-Eaters

In many cultures, especially in the European Middle Ages, food was placed on a corpse to “absorb” its sins. A sin-eater’s duty was to consume the retrieved food, thereby taking on the deceased’s sins.

In 18th and 19th century London, those who scavenged river mud for valuable items were known as Mudlarks.
Sometimes you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do, even if it means ending up in jobs that no longer exist in a few years.

The Groom of the Stool was the king’s personal attendant, responsible for more than just regular cleaning. They were tasked with emptying the king’s chamber pot.
