In case you Accept the Mediocre Work or Not?
Many recent graduates have a vision of landing their dream job right after college and embarking on a successful career journey. However, not everyone is sure where they stand in terms of salary expectations. Regardless, you need to ask yourself if you are willing to accept an average job or not.
Unfortunately, reality often has different plans for these young professionals. “Idealists” may become disillusioned when they realize they won’t be managing anyone anytime soon, and others, well, they might find that even if they do receive a job offer, it’s far from what they had hoped for.
Nowadays, many students preparing to enter the “real world” wonder how they should handle mediocre jobs and job offers. Should you accept it? Should you wait for a better one to come along? Here’s our take on it:
Should You Accept an Average Job or Job Offer?
Yes, you should. Did you not expect that answer? Let’s break it down.
The economy is highly unpredictable. There’s nothing wrong with being somewhat selectiveâcautious, if you willâwhen choosing a job. But you shouldn’t be overly so to the point where you turn down a good offer in hopes of getting a more impressive one.
There’s a job-skill mismatch issue. Here’s a dose of reality: there are job vacancies out there. Unfortunately, qualified individuals for those positions are hard to come by.
The cost of living isn’t getting cheaper. Every day, there’s a product or service that’s more expensive today than it was yesterday. What’s worse is that people’s incomes aren’t increasing. So, any budgeting plan we had last month probably won’t work this month.
Every job is an opportunity to enhance your “market value.” Whether it’s in your chosen field or not, every job can add valuable experience to your resume. You can learn new skills and pick up new knowledge along the way, which will benefit your career in the long run.
As Steve Jobs said, “The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.” While this is a wonderfully inspiring quote, it doesn’t apply to everyone at every stage of their careers. It’s more important to learn to love what you’re doing, do it well, and never lose sight of what you want to achieve in the future.
